PC-BSD 8.0-BETA Released

The PC-BSD Team is pleased to announce the availability of PC-BSD 8.0-BETA (Hubble Edition), running FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE, and KDE 4.3.4

Version 8.0 contains a number of enhancements and improvements. For a full list of changes, please refer to the changelog. Some of the notable changes are:

  • FreeBSD 8.0-Release
  • KDE 4.3.4
  • Brand new System Installer, allows the install of PC-BSD or FreeBSD
  • Run in Live mode directly from DVD
  • Updated Software Manager, allows browsing and installing applications directly
  • Support for 3D acceleration with NVIDIA drivers on amd64

Version 8.0-BETA of PC-BSD is available for download from our mirrors, and will be available shortly as bittorrent from www.gotbsd.net. Also, our Pootle Translation page has been updated with the latest strings, translators should now be able to finish localizing PC-BSD into their language.

PC-BSD security update (devfs)

A security update for PC-BSD 7.1.1 has been released today. This update fixes a potential privilege escalation attack with
devfs / vfs in the default kernel.

This security update effects users of both i386 and amd64 versions of PC-BSD.

To install the update, simply log into your desktop, and run:

Start -> System Settings -> Software & Updates -> Run in Administrator Mode

Once the Online Update Manager is running, select the "Security update - devfs" patch, and click "Install selected updates". After the update has finished downloading / installing, you will need to reboot the system to complete the process.

Release: PBI Builder 2.4

A small update to the PBI Builder software, version 2.4, has been released today. This version adds a few new variables to the module creation process, which allows developers to pick "target" ports they wish to have autopopulated and added to the resulting PBI file. Version 2.3 of the PBI Builder software has been released for FreeBSD 7.x / PC-BSD 7.x. This update adds functionality to specify the version of FreeBSD you wish a target port to be compiled under. Also updated is the PBI Auto-Populate feature, which copies port files into the respective PBI automatically. For more details please refer to the changelog and wiki.

Version 7.1.1 contains a number of bugfixes and improvements from PC-BSD 7.1, including KDE 4.2.4, improvements to printing support, Xorg Server 1.6.1, and much more
